This course aims to help you improve your research capability as part of your professional practice in environmental and natural resource economics by allowing you to participate in a hands-on practice of designing and developing your own research proposal from the beginning. You will also get an opportunity to learn how to use the necessary tools to conduct environmental and natural resource economics research which will help you in applying for research funding.

Organized by The Economy and Environment Partnership for Lower Mekong Subregion (EEI-LMS) Research Center, and Faculty of Economics, Khon Kaen University

The main themes

The EEPSEA Annual Conference 2022 is covering variety research papers topics that apply the tools of economics and trans-disciplinary approach in the analysis of policy-relevant environmental challenges and related issues in Southeast Asia in the following areas:

• Interdisciplinary approach for environmental and resource management
• Economics of climate change: Damage assessment and adaptation options
• Designing behavioral economics tools for green growth strategy: Greening forestry sector, renewable energy, greening consumption.
• Coastal and marine resources conservation for climate change resilience and poverty reduction
• Urban poor and the environment: Industrial pollution, ecosystem and human health impact, resilience, policy instruments and institutional changes.
• Green energy for sustainable development
• Environmental trans-boundary problems in Southeast Asia

Organizational arrangement

Participants will have an opportunity to discuss various transdisciplinary issues related to adaptation, mitigation, and strategies toward a greener, cleaner and inclusive development for Southeast Asia, including policy instruments, future scenarios, transition management, international cooperation and regime at this Annual Meeting.

Keynote speakers

Prof.Dr.Uri Gneezy, University of California San Diego

Uri Gneezy is an economist, behavioral scientist, innovative strategist, entrepreneur, the Epstein/Atkinson Endowed Chair in Behavioral Economics and Professor of Economics & Strategy at the Rady School of Management, UC San Diego.

Uri’s early work on when and why incentives can backfire has become the cornerstone in a compelling line of research that explores when traditional economic theories fail to explain real human behavior. He is the co-author of the Washington Post bestseller, The Why Axis. His work has been covered by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and has been featured in the bestselling books Freakonomics, Predictably Irrational, and Drive. His research focuses on putting behavioral economics to work in the real world, where theory meets application.

Prof.Dr.Lars Hein, University of Wageningen

Lars Hein is Professor Ecosystem Services and Environmental Change and deputy chair of the Environmental Systems Analysis Group at Wageningen University. He published over 100 articles in the field of ecological economics, natural resource management and land use planning. Lars was previously employed as Senior Environmental Advisor at Shell International (2006-2010) and as Environmental Expert at the FAO/World Bank Collaborative Program, Rome (1997-2002). He is a member of several advisory boards for both industry and international organizations and received a number of awards for his research including a prestigious Personal Grant from the European Research Council in 2010. His main focus of research is ‘ecosystem accounting’, i.e. developing methodologies for the measurement of ecosystem capital consistent with national accounting. He is one of the main contributing authors of the UN System of Environmental-Economic Accounting – Experimental Ecosystem Accounting Framework (SEEA EEA, 2012) as well as of the SEEA EEA Technical Recommendations (2017). Other fields of expertise include the development of sustainable and profitable natural resource management strategies, climate change adaptation, ecosystem services modelling and valuation, and environmental cost benefit analysis.
