Summary:
This handbook contains 14 cases of real-life environmental problems in Southeast Asia. The case writers present the data and analysis of the issues and their solutions based on the research projects they did, which were all funded by the Economy and Environment Program for Southeast Asia. The problem-oriented cases end with questions posed to resource managers and/or policy makers. They are meant for training course participants or students of environment economics courses who will be asked to play the roles of decision makers, consultants, or analysts when they discuss the questions posed to them. Specifically, the cases presented in this handbook deal with issues involving (1) the conflicting uses of critical natural resources in both marine and forest areas; (2) overfishing and aquaculture pollution and efforts to restore fish habitats; (3) water pollution cases, particularly those caused by economic activities such as livestock development and the agro?processing industry; and (4) the pressure on forest resources as a result of rising energy consumption and the search for alternative energy sources.

Summary: This book presents how the strategic and conscious integration of gender into environmental economics research can enrich the analysis, thereby enabling researchers to give a more accurate assessment of the socioeconomic dynamics in environmental and natural resource management (ENRM). Specifically, the engendered framework presented will show how researchers can move beyond merely counting what men and women do, toward determining who has control over and access to resources. It will show how gender relations with respect to ENRM can be understood, as well as the factors that affect such relationships. Moreover, the analysis will show why engendering ENRE research matters—it will present how the results and analysis of studies with a gender dimension differ from those without. This book will also show how the engendering process can be viable and successful if it is consciously and strategically undertaken in the research design. Lastly, this book offers recommendations on how to streamline the research procedure in order to address concerns on resource constraints such that the engendering process will not be burdensome.

This monograph explores ways by which natural resource managers can address wastewater pollution as a result of rapid industrialization and other economic activities. The ecosystem damages focused on in this monograph resulted mainly from the dumping of untreated wastewater from industries and intensive aquaculture.

While the studies reviewed for this monograph are mainly from Vietnam, they mirror issues and concerns prevalent in the region and are thus a rich source of both empirical and anecdotal information and experiences. The management strategies featured are general enough to transcend different socio-economic and political settings. These are presented so that users will build upon and adapt these strategies to better suit their unique situations.
